Sopron is close enough to Vienna that you can make a small micro-trip there. A day – i.e. a few hours’ stay – is definitely worthwhile. Even if the city is very small and manageable.
Climbing the 60m high fire tower is certainly a highlight. In good weather, you can see the hilly landscape around Sopron and as far as the Schneeberg in Lower Austria.
A striking feature of the old town, which is surrounded by an old wall, are the many wonderful passageways that allow you to look into the residents’ backyards.
You can also recognize the inhabitants of Sopron by the fact that – if you walk behind them – they can quickly disappear from the streetscape, because they all know the inconspicuous entrances to the through-houses, while uninitiated tourists take long detours on the streets to get from one alley to the next.
The beautiful old patina, which can still be discovered in many corners, is particularly attractive. Some houses are still preserved in their old splendor and have not been renovated in a sterile manner. Some parts of the old town still look a little run-down, but this does not detract from the charm of the city.
New and older coffee houses add to the comfort of the excursion. Enjoy the break from a relaxed tour – what a relaxing day!
